Jozi officially kicks of First Thursdays for 2019

JOBURG – Top five things to do on First Thursdays.

First Thursdays is a public event and free to attend. Art galleries and cultural events around Joburg stay open until 9pm or later on the first Thursday of every month, allowing anyone to explore the city on foot and experience the cultural wealth the city has to offer.

In order to help you figure out what to do and what to see, we’ve curate top five things to do during the beginning of 2019’s First Thursdays.

Top five things to do on First Thursdays:

Music and art at WAM

Wits Art Museum is set to kick off weekly First Thursdays events with music and art. Artist and DJ Robert Machiri and curator Boitumelo Tlhoaele will be experimenting with communicating the focussed, labour-intensive processes of lithographic printmaking in an innovative and experimental music performance, which is inspired by the exhibition, The Art of Lithography: A Collaborative Expression of LL Editions.

Ubuhle Bekhiwane Ziimpethu by Ayanda Mabulu

Kalashnikovv Gallery presents Ubuhle Bekhiwane, a solo exhibition of new work by Ayanda Mabulu. The body of work features new paintings, sculpture and a performative intervention to be held in the gallery space on the night of the exhibition opening. All of the new works are the first pieces in a larger series of artworks to be revealed throughout the course of 2019.

First Thursdays at 99 Juta

Crema Design will be in the pop-up space on the ground floor for the months of February and March at 99 Juta. They will be showcasing lighting and furniture displays by leading brands and designers including Tom Dixon, Muuto, Diesel, and Tradition, Lee Broom, HAY, Gubi and FLOS.

Flourish

Awaken your dance floor energy at Kitcheners to the sounds selected by some of the finest talents in the arts and culture community. The likes of Lady Skollie, Stefanie Jason, Black Jacks, SoundSystem Danger Gevaar Ingozi Studio + Simnikiwe Buhlungu, Tiger Maremela, and Negiste Yesside Johnson will be doing the most for the night.

Puma Select Sessions

Puma is back with another amazing lineup this Thursday in the Puma Courtyard. The line-up includes Kid Fonque, Pierre Johnson, FKA Mash, Keegs Bantom, Matt Suttner and Ronald Adlai.
