Jeppe police search for a woman in connection with a case of fraud

JEPPE – The victim was surprised to get a cell phone notification about a lease that she did not apply for and it was approved.

The Jeppe police are looking for a woman who allegedly defrauded a property management company using a fake identity document.

According to the spokesperson for the Jeppe Police Station, Captain Richard Munyayi, the suspect leased an apartment using the identity document.

Munyayi said the identity document belonged to another woman and her photo had been replaced with that of the suspect’s.

The woman who the identity document belonged to told police that she had logged on to check her credit score on her cell phone after she received a strange notification.

“She was surprised to receive a notification of a credit check by a company known as Ithemba Property informing her about a property she had leased with them,” said Munyayi adding that the woman’s identity document had been missing all along and she was unaware of it.

“She was told that according to their records she had applied for an apartment for rental at one of their buildings and the application has been approved. She then visited the apartment and was showed the application form with an identity document copy attached to it.”

Munyayi added that the identity document copy had her name and identity document numbers but the photo was of someone else.

The complainant then took the copy to Home Affairs where it was confirmed that someone had committed fraud using her identity document.

A case of fraud has been opened with the police and they are looking for the woman appearing on the identity document copy.
