WATCH: Muzi’s electrifying one-man live show lingers on

JOBURG – Afrovision maestro previews new music at exclusive Deezer performance.

Last week, producer-singer-songwriter Muzi hosted long-standing and recent fans to an exclusive night of electrifying performances. The night was part of online streaming service, Deezer’s #Next campaign which features the young muso.

“My manager, John, and I came up with this idea of doing a show. I’m very big on doing things for people I’m doing this because I appreciate it,” Muzi said

Keeping a sense of exclusivity, guests were able to score entry to the show following a Twitter post by Muzi calling on his fans to send through their details via email to secure their spot, and as expected, people came out in their numbers at Arts on Main in Maboneng for an astounding and electrifying performance.

“I was very nervous. I didn’t even think people were going to come but it’s very humbling because I still think the music I make is a risk doing something not mainstream, but, seeing people so many people come through makes me feel good,” said Muzi.

If you’re deeply rooted in SA’s fast-paced, eclectic and forever-changing music scene then you certainly know that Muzi advocates for independence in the industry. Muzi’s acclaimed album, Afrovision, was released through Sony Music Entertainment Africa under exclusive licence from his label, We The Bundu.

“We’ve been doing this since 2013. To be able to get a show that was oversubscribed and receive close to 2 000 emails is crazy but it’s possible and we do it for free…if you do everything right the money will come, right now, it’s about the art and people connecting. That’s why I leave my heart on the stage,” he said.

A highlight of the night was when Muzi previewed his next single, We are Growing, a rework of   Margaret Singana’s hit single from the 80s, Shaka Zulu TV series. The single does not only serve as a display of Muzi’s musical prowess but an archive of would-be forgotten stories and classics positioning the young muso as a bridge between the new and older generation of musicians and fans. The single is expected to be released on 15 February and will be released under We The Bundu and features all new instrumentation and vocals.

“It’s a retelling of a story that might have been forgotten,” Muzi said.
