Update: 5 February, 4.20pm:
The early hours of 5 February saw protesters demonstrating in Parktown.
The Rosebank Killarney Gazette this afternoon received an update from the Johannesburg Metro police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar that Pikitup was cleaning up the area.
Minnaar further stated, “…As per information received, it was Wits students who were demanding free education, and they exercised their anger by trashing the street.”

Earlier, the Rosebank Killarney Gazette had reported that, according to a post by REZA (@crimeairnetwork) on Twitter, protesters had emptied garbage bins all over Sherborne Road and the protests were allegedly related to accommodation issues.
However, upon the Rosebank Killarney Gazette‘s arrival at the scene of the protest, new information surfaced that the protest was related to workers demanding better salaries. At the time of publishing, it could not be established if this was the case and who the workers were employed by.
The Gazette was also informed that Metro police and police had arrived and the protesters dispersed.
