Handbag ‘snatcher’ nabbed in Bramley by the Metro police

BRAMLEY – The suspect was apprehended while he was still in possession of the stolen items.

A suspect’s attempted robbery of a woman in Bramley’s Andries Street on 13 January was short-lived when cops pounced on the man.

This was after a witness to the crime chased the fleeing suspect while at the same time calling for help.

A Metro police patrol saw the chase and heard the screams of the witness and responded, resulting in the arrest of the 29-year-old suspect. He was handed over to the Bramley police.

The spokesperson for the Bramley Police Station, Captain Molefe Mogodi, said the victim was walking alone when she was approached by a man who was allegedly armed with a knife.

The man is said to have threatened the victim with the knife while he demanded her handbag. “The suspect then grabbed the handbag and ran away,” Mogodi said.”There was someone who happened to witness the crime and without wasting time, followed the suspect while calling for help. The Metro police saw what was happening and responded.”

The suspect was apprehended while still in possession of the handbag with all its contents still inside. He was detained at Bramley Police Station and will appear in court soon to face charges of armed robbery and possession of dangerous weapon.

The detectives will profile the suspect to determine if he is wanted for other crimes or can be linked to other robbery incidents in the community.
