Riky Rick and Red Bull Music establish platform for undiscovered talent

JOBURG – Riky Rick shares knowledge with Cotton Eaters ahead of festival.

On Thursday night 31 January, ‘Cotton Eaters’ gathered at Kalashnikovv Gallery in Braamfontein for a discussion with Red Bull Music featuring Riky Rick. For an hour, the rapper outlined the key moments in his musical journey thus far as well as spoke about what the future holds.

On 2 February, the first Cotton Fest will take place at The Station in Newtown with a line-up that features the likes of AKA and Kwesta. The rapper reminisced about how he remembers AKA, who was then part of Entity, as being an inspiration to him while he was still in high school.

The Cotton Fest was started in order to give up-and-coming artists who would not be booked at major festivals and events a chance to play the same stage as their idols. He credited Red Bull as being one of the first brands to take young artists and put them on the same stages they were denied by promoters.

The second half of the night featured a listening session where aspiring musicians had the opportunity to play their music for Riky Rick. Many of the questions that arose during the discussion were about how young artists can get their music on the radio. The rapper said that as soon as your music is on the radio it is already a hit and that young artists need to hand out their CDs and use streaming platforms to get their music out and grow their audience.

Cotton Fest is a fashion and music-lover event for the new generation of South African youth it is curated and hosted by Riky Rick. Cotton Eaters is a nickname for those with an appetite to consume new fashion and feel that it represents who they are. Uniting hip-hop and street culture. Featuring a superstar line-up of the best of local musicians.
