How to handle threatening situations

DUNKELD WEST – Domestic workers attended a defence class hosted by Hirsch's in partnership with Planet Fitness and got certificates thereafter.

Finding oneself in a threatening situation can be unexpected and scary, however, an individual with basic defence skills can better handle the situation.

Hirsch’s and Planet Fitness hosted a self-defence class to equip people with skills to protect themselves in such situations. The class held at Hirsch’s in Dunkeld West was attended by a number of women who participated in the demonstrations.

Public relations officer at Hirsch’s, Marjone Barnard said the classes were held every second last Thursday of the month to empower women in the community. “This time instead of teaching them about home appliances we decided to make it more personal and give them defence classes,” added Barnard.

“Employers can nominate their domestic workers and bring the forms to the local Hirsch’s offices.”

A personal trainer of Planet Fitness Craighall, Sunday Seakamela advised the participants not to panic when finding themselves in threatening situations because that may lead to an improper response. “Most of the people who mug are scared, however, there are those that are not scared and carry guns; do not try to take action against those ones,” said Seakamela.

“Check your surroundings to see if it is suitable to fight, otherwise just ignore troublesome situations and this doesn’t mean you are a coward.”

He added that when a person was scared, the body automatically released certain energy which enabled them to escape from danger. However, when the situation calls for defence, in instances where someone tries to grab a handbag, Seakamela advised the women to carry their bag in their weaker hand. By doing this, they will be able to throw a more powerful punch with their stronger hand at the perpetrator. He demonstrated how to throw a punch to target the attacker’s body part which would hurt the most such as the back of the neck, abdomen or face.

“You build up confidence by doing something over and over again. Take time every day in the morning to exercise and strengthen your core or abdomen as this is where a person’s energy comes from,” said Seakamela. He warned the women to avoid punching with the inside of their palms but rather make use of their knuckles.

At the end of the class, all attendees were given certificates, including the domestic of the month.
