32-year-old man cuffed for being in possession of an illegal firearm in Hillbrow

HILLBROW – The recovered pistol was confiscated and taken for further forensic investigation.

A 32-year-old man was arrested for being in possession of an illegal firearm with its serial numbers filed off during a police patrol in Hillbrow.

According to the Johannesburg Flying Squad spokesperson, Sergeant Desmond Subramoney the incident took place on 22 January at the intersection of Leeds and Banket streets near the notorious Joubert Park.

“Our members were patrolling the area when they received a tip-off from security officers about a person with an unlicensed firearm,” he said.

“The police proceeded to the address and found a 32-year-old man and asked permission to search him.

“A 9mm Taurus pistol was found in his possession and he failed to produce a valid firearm licence.”

The gun was confiscated and Subramoney said it was taken for further forensic investigation to determine whether it has been used in any criminal activity.

The suspect will be charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition when he appears in court soon.

He was meanwhile detained at the Hillbrow Police Station.
