Gauteng police arrest over 900 suspects over the weekend

PARKVIEW – Gauteng police are pleased that crime prevention and combating interventions are gaining momentum across the province.

Gauteng police were thankful for the information provided to them by communities that resulted in the arrest of more than 900 suspects and the impounding of taxis that were non-compliant with road legislation this past weekend.

Gauteng police spokesperson Kay Makhubela said, “Crime prevention and combating interventions by police in Gauteng are gaining momentum as intelligence-driven operations, stop and search operations and other routine policing activations become the order of the day in the province.”

In one of the incidents, Makhubela said police responded to information regarding a cell phone shop robbery in Parkview. “The robbers were pointed out while driving in a white Kia Rio that sped away, leading to a chase that saw police corner the suspects in Berea when the latter’s vehicle allegedly hit a pole and came to a standstill.

“Three suspects, one of them armed, fled, while two were trapped and later certified dead by paramedics,” said Makhubela who added that the circumstances surrounding the death of the suspects were yet to be confirmed.

The 900 suspects arrested were for crimes including murder, rape, robbery, hijackings, possession of unlicensed firearms, dealing in drugs, possession of stolen motor vehicles, theft, and drinking and driving.

All suspects will appear in magistrates’ courts in Gauteng in due course.
