Student Sponsorship Programme’s 25 matrics bring home 69 distinctions

PARKTOWN – Student Sponsorship Programme matrics excel at final exams.

The Student Sponsorship Programme based in Parktown was proud to announce that their 25 matrics achieved 69 distinctions in the recent IEB and NSC exams.

The programme sponsors a select few gifted yet financially disadvantaged learners and offers maths, science and English skills for their five-year high school duration at the top schools in the country including St John’s College, Kingsmead College, Roedean School and Redhill School.

Chantel Maina of Kingsmead College was one of their top achievers attaining seven distinctions in the IEB exams while Gabriel Tidy of St John’s College achieved six distinctions and Cassidy Gray of Roedean School earned four distinctions.

The Grade 6 children who are selected out of more than a 1 000 children nationwide for their high marks in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects undergo a 10-month testing process to qualify for the high school scholarship. The combined household income of the recipients may not exceed R20 000 per month to qualify to apply for the scholarship.

The programme was co-founded in 1998 by entrepreneur Teresa Clarke to develop leaders for South Africa who are committed to the creation of a non-sexist, non-racist, democratic, united and prosperous country. It has given 1 500 bursaries valued at R150 million to scholars to attend schools in Gauteng, the KZN Midlands, Hillcrest, Grahamstown, East London and Somerset West.
