Wits Art Museum announces new opening hours

JOBURG – New opening hours at WAM for 2019.

Home to an extraordinary collection of African art, including contemporary and historical art from South Africa and art from West and Central Africa, the Wits Art Museum (WAM) is one of Joburg’s foremost tourist attractions, along with the Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill.

It is part of the Wits University Cultural Precinct, which is just three blocks from Nelson Mandela Bridge. WAM is in the trendy, reviving Braamfontein precinct, which is also home to many students, interesting shops and places to eat such as The WAM Cafe – a fun place to meet friends and enjoy delicious food and coffee.

Opening tomorrow, 8 January, the museum has announced new opening hours for 2019.

Due to increased demand from schools and university groups, the museum announced that it will now be open from Tuesdays to Saturdays between 10am and 4pm, and will no longer be open on Sundays.

The museum said it took this decision in order to accommodate more school and university groups, however, entrance to the museum will remain free and open to the public.

In light of the new operating hours, be sure to check out the museum’s current exhibition, The Art of Lithography: A Collaborative Expression of LL Editions, an exhibition which pays homage to master printer Leshoka Joe Legate as it celebrates a significant milestone for the Johannesburg-based fine art lithographic printmaking studio, which was founded in 2013.

The exhibition, curated by Boitumelo Tlhoaele and Tšhegofatso Mabaso, explores the nature of the collaboration which is deeply rooted in printmaking studio practices. It highlights the processes, expressions, experiences, potentials and tensions between the printmaker and artists. The exhibition showcases work by 24 young and established artists who have worked with Legate since LL Editions opened.
