Zoo Lake among Sapra’s innovative plans for 2019

SAXONWOLD – The Saxonwold and Parkwood Residents Association invites residents to join the association and participate in their community activities.

The Saxonwold and Parkwood Residents Association (Sapra) has been taking on the task of town planning and heritage portfolio with numerous applications to respond to and manage this past year.

Chairperson of Sapra, Tessa Turvey, said they achieved a major win with the agreement by City of Joburg through the public protector’s office to adhere to all by-laws stipulated by the City in relation to outdoor advertising and signage. She added that the biggest challenge would now be enforcement.

“We have started a clean-out of all our storm-water drains and have hired four men from the Immaculata Shelter to manage this process,” said Turvey.

“All is going well so far, this will continue [for the rest of 2019] and our hope is that we can make it sustainable without removing responsibility away from the Council.”

She added that they installed an owl box into Fearnhead Park as well as a basketball hoop and had approved rubbish bins for dog poop and litter to be placed around the area with the Sapra logo on them. Turvey said they were now waiting on Johannesburg Roads Agency to give the go ahead.

Sapra secretary Caryn Turnbull said the biggest challenge is to create awareness to residents of what Sapra does and for them to pay their annual membership fee. “Currently only 14 per cent of our residents are paid-up members. If everyone could send a message on their street WhatsApp groups to encourage them to join Sapra that would be hugely beneficial to sustain our annual initiatives.”

The association’s plans for this year include to find something more sustainable for the clean-up team; to install the bins; to get their new and updated precinct plan written; to keep improving Fearnhead Park and to get the Zoo Lake master plan approved by the mayor and his committee.

Turvy added, “We are wanting to get four overalls made with the Sapra logo on for the clean-up team so when they are working in the suburb everyone can recognise them and it will make them look more professional.

“We also would like residents to commit their time to the A Re Sebetseng clean-up initiative every third Saturday of the month (or Sunday) as the responsibility of our community starts with us

“We hope that 2019 is a peaceful and prosperous year for everyone.”
