Starting 2019 on a clean slate

ROSEBANK – Before rushing to throw away used stationery, the St Teresa's community saw it fit to find good use for it by giving it to Ikageng from Soweto to assist them in starting off the new academic year.

Two young Grade 6 learners from St Teresa’s School who took out their time to collect used stationery for a school that needs it, handed over the collection.

Kayla Nurcombe-Thorne and Jennifer Boucher initiated the project and mobilised the rest of the school and community to follow suit. Ikageng from Soweto was the recipient of the stationery which means they will be starting the year 2019 with pens and pencils to write with and notepads to write on.

Ikageng is a community-based organisation that cares for orphaned and vulnerable children around the area of Soweto. Ikageng provides psycho-social support and counsel to its beneficiaries through the delivery of social programmes such as education, health and nutrition.

“The stationery will be used to ensure that each child has all the supplies they need at the relevant schools at which they have been placed, while also providing supplies for their after-school support at Ikageng,” said Shelli Nurcombe-Thorne head of strategy and copywriting at Parenthesis Communications.

She added that they were so unbelievably grateful and overwhelmed by the children and the community’s generosity.

“We are also delighted that the school will make this stationery collection an annual occurrence, with new beneficiaries chosen each year,” said the head of Ikageng, Carol Dyantyi.

The education programme offered at Ikageng ensures that all children enrolled with Ikageng are placed in institutions of learning and development from early childhood development (ECD) to tertiary. They provide for the children’s uniforms and other learning needs and provide a link between schools and families.

They do all they can to make parents or caregivers interested in children’s education as well as motivate the children to remain in school for the best possible grades. Emphasis is placed on excellence in areas of studies and academic performance. They facilitate the payment of fees, retention of children in schools and provide

after-school support to motivate children for improved results.
