St Teresa’s wishes residents blessed holidays

ROSEBANK – St Teresa's School has had an activity-filled year with a lot of projects being achieved which included demolishing an old building which they hope will be fully replaced come 2019.

It has been an extremely exciting year for St Teresa’s School. According to Jean Carey, principal of the intermediate phase, this is the year where the school broke ground in a number of areas. “We literally broke new ground in the intermediate phase with the demolition and construction of the new Junior School block on the corner of Keyes and Tyrwhitt avenues. The inaugural START Festival held in September to coincide with the Johannesburg Art Week, was a resounding success, not only raising a substantial sum of money, but also placing St Teresa’s on the map as a space for enriching, educational and fun art,” said Carey.

She added that the foundation phase in Craighall Park has enjoyed a number of stellar activities this year.

Their charity events include events such as collecting goodie bags for CHOC children, having civvies to collect money for Rare Diseases Day, dressing up as book characters and collecting books for less-privileged schools and coming to school barefoot to raise money for less-privileged schools.

Carey said the education at St Teresa’s is outstanding. Coding, robotics and Stem (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) were added to the grades 4 to 9 curricula. “Teaching our pupils to think independently, work collaboratively, ask difficult questions and problem-solving are keys to them finding their space in the 21st century workspace.”

The principal said the challenges that have beset the Rosebank campus has been the ongoing shortage of parking in the area. She is hopeful that once the new building is complete this will be alleviated to a point. The school also tries to continue providing a holistic education and being mindful of all the wonderful different characters that make up the school.

Carey said, “We are looking forward to 2019 and the completion of the build as well as a learner development programme is evolving into a bridging class in grades 2 and 3. Children needing specialist help in mathematics and English will be taught separately for those subjects at the beginning of the day and then return to their mainstream class for the rest of the day.

“To all the Rosebank Killarney Gazette readers: May the love of the Holy Family, the joy of the angels and the peace of the Christ child be with you all over the Christmas season.”
