South Africa’s best shisanyama has been crowned

JOBURG – Diepkloof’s Meat Meet comes out victorious in Windhoek SA’s Best Shisanyama search.

The Windhoek SA’s Best Shisanyama for 2018 ended with the grand finale on 9 December when the four finalists, Chaf Pozi, Senzi’s, Imbizo Shisanyama and Meat Meet went tong-to-tong at Nasrec.

The voting for the ultimate winner took place on the day and the public has chosen Meat Meet from Soweto’s Diepkloof Zone 3 as the Windhoek SA’s Best Shisanyama for 2018.

At the end of a campaign that began in September and featured public voting via SMS, radio and social media, Homi’s Butchery, also known as Meat Meet, Homi Nyakale, the owner, with her daughter and son, Khothatso and Khunou Mokhele took the title which comes with over R1 million in prizes including a cash component, funds for marketing and activations, refurbishing and Windhoek products.

Khothatso Mokhele said they base the culture of Meat Meet on the integrity and quality of their products as well as respect and friendship of their customers

“It’s great to know that all the hard work, long hours and absolute dedication to perfection over the years has paid off and that our customers love our meat so much,” said Khothatso Mokhele.

The competition is the brainchild of Windhoek, and marketing manager of Windhoek, Dana Katz, said they were proud to be involved in the campaign for a second year.

“The shisanyama industry is one that embodies entrepreneurial spirit, community development and true South African flavour. It’s about far more than cooking, it’s deeply entrenched in our roots as South Africans and it’s about bringing people together. The campaign continues to capture the attention of the public and we’re very happy to have crowned Meat Meet as champions in 2018,” Katz said.

Chef Benny Masekwameng said shisanyamas are an excellent way for entrepreneurs to start out.

“Running a successful shisanyama takes hard work, creative thinking, good business acumen and outstanding braai recipes. And don’t forget the vibe! People come to have fun, so a good vibe and personal treatment make all the difference,” Chef Benny said.
