Former Northview High School matriculants celebrate 55th reunion

DOWERGLEN – There was lots of fun, laughter and memories were shared.

Northview High School’s Class of 1963 held their 55-year reunion at the Er Bucon Restaurant in Dowerglen on 2 December.

Many of the former classmates travelled from overseas just to spend about four hours with their old friends.

Organiser, Maureen Machanik, described it as a success story that needed to be told and said everyone was so excited to see each other.

“We matriculated from Northview High School in 1963,” said Machanik.

“We have maintained a wonderful connection over the years and some very firm friendships have been formed. We had classmates attending from Canada, Perth [Australia] and Somerset West but sadly over the years we have lost some of our friends.”

Machanik has been instrumental in organising their 25- 35- and 50-year reunions and is planning another one in the near future.

She said to get everyone to come took seriously hard work. “As for the guys it was simple, but for the ladies, it was very difficult because some of them have gotten married and changed their surnames.

“We, however, managed to get together and everyone is excited and even looking forward to the next one in 2023. It was a wonderful evening, and for some of our friends it was their first reunion that they could attend.”

Machanik said one of the attendees, Alberto Fogolin, even discharged himself from hospital for four hours just to attend the reunion. She said he sang their school song and then followed up with a beautiful rendition of Mama sung in Italian.

“He dedicated this song to all the wonderful women in the world who are sometimes taken for granted,” concluded Machanik.
