King David Linksfield learners give back

LINKSFIELD – The learners at King David Linksfield hosted their fourth annual Ubuntu Africa outreach programme.

The King David Linksfield learners gave back through their annual Ubuntu Africa programme.

The programme was organised and run by the school’s outgoing Diller Foundation student leaders Shira Morris, Jenna Kaufman, Eli Kaplan and Megan Lewis.

Jenna said, “Diller is a Jewish leadership programme that runs internationally. Johannesburg was one of the first cohorts outside of America to be established… At the end of the year, we do an impact project and we have chosen to do Ubuntu to help others.”

The programme ran from 2 to 5 December and the King David learners hosted underprivileged children from the Hayani Support Project, an NGO based in Orange Grove. Mary Mudau from Hayani Support Project praised the programme as many children in their care have nowhere to go during the school holidays and the programme gives them some positive fun and engagement.

The Hayani Support Project is a day care and residential care service for women and children and provides outreach to township areas. Some of the children from their outreach programmes in Alexandra were present at the Ubuntu Africa events.

Shira added that their school has given them full support with full usage of their grounds including their tuckshop, hall and swimming pool but they have received a lot of help from donations such as swimming costumes and food.

The programme was filled with tons of fun including swimming, art and crafts and dance classes among other things.

Spokesperson for King David Linksfield Gaby Cohen said that the programme was amazing as it was organised by the young leaders and 16 other Diller Foundation learners at school and brought so much joy to the children.
