Enjoy a picnic at Zoo Lake this festive season

PARKVIEW – Residents are encouraged to keep the park clean and green.

If you’re stuck in Joburg for the holidays, why not enjoy what’s on offer at Zoo Lake.

Chairperson of the Zoo Lake Users Group, Fran Haslam encouraged residents and visitors to make responsible use of the beautiful park this December.

Whether you’re looking to enjoy a picnic, kick around a soccer ball, enjoy a refreshing swim at the public swimming pool, hire a rowing boat to explore the lake or exercise in the fresh air, Zoo Lake offers a stunning setting.

Enthusiastic runners can join a 5km time trial on the paving around Zoo Lake every Saturday morning from 7.30am organised by the Rockies Road Runners. The group hope to turn the time trial into a family parkrun next year.

Runners can also observe four-time Olympian and New York Marathon winner Hendrick Ramaala and his athletes using Zoo Lake as their training venue of choice.

“Come and enjoy the open green spaces of our beautiful park. Bring your family and friends. This is a picnic park so we encourage picnicking. Enjoy all the amenities and keep our park clean and green,” said Haslam.

Zoo Lake visitors should take note of the by-laws that state that no littering, no alcohol, no braaing outside the designated braai areas and no loud music is allowed at the park.

Haslam also cautioned Zoo Lake users to not dispose of hot coals at the base of trees following an incident where a tree fell over on 31 October.

“Let’s make it a safe, fun and enjoyable festive season for all. Happy holidays.”
