JOHANNESBURG – The police are currently leading a manhunt to find two prisoners who escaped from the South Gauteng High Court on 5 December.

 

The police have launched a manhunt following the escape of two prisoners, charged with murder, at the South Gauteng High Court on 5 December.

The escape occurred at approximately 2pm. Provincial police spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo said, “The first escapee is Mongezi Mcunukelwa, 31-year-old, who was appearing in court for two counts of murder committed in Katlehong in July 2017.”

“The second escapee is Sbonelo Nkosingiphe Thwala, aged 25, who was also appearing for two counts of murder committed in Jeppe in April this year as well as possession of unlawful firearm and ammunition.”

None of the court officials or members of the public were injured during the escape.

Masondo said, “An additional charge of escaping from lawful custody will be added to both suspects. None of the officials of the court or members of the public were injured during the escape.”

The Gauteng police have appointed a team of senior detectives to trace the suspects and investigate the circumstances surrounding the escape.

Masondo added that the police are appealing to anyone who might have information on the whereabouts of these dangerous suspects to go to their nearest police station or call 08600 10111.

He stressed to the community that no should attempt to apprehend the suspects as they are deemed dangerous.
