Building project continues at Paterson Park

NORWOOD – The contractor will be executing works on the southern side of the Paterson Park.

Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) has confirmed that GVK Siya Zama has taken over the development of Paterson Park after the previous contractor was fired.

According to Susan Munyai, the spokesperson for the agency, the contractor’s work was terminated due to alleged poor performance and could not execute the work to its completion.

Munyai said, “The contractor [GVK] will be executing work on the southern side of Paterson Park, which is the construction of the multipurpose sports complex which consists of a pool building, an auditorium, a library, outdoor courts as well as the refurbished recreation centre.”

The agency had paid R26 million to the previous contractor and Munyai said phase three of this project would cost R115 million. To avoid future mistakes, Munyai added that the agency had put a project management system in place that would monitor the performance of contractors executing the work.

“It is through this project management system that the previous contractor’s work was terminated for poor performance. The JDA has to ensure that the projects are executed within time, cost and budget and will be monitoring the company closely.”

The site was handed over on 20 November and occupation of the site was expected to take place on 26 November.

Munyai said the contract period for GVK was 10 months.

Ward 73 councillor, Eleanor Huggett confirmed that the agency had handed over the site and the contractor would now be cleaning, clearing and preparinge and hope the building process will start next year.

She said, “GVK will be employing local labourers through the normal EPWP [Extended Public Works Programme] process for the cleaning of the site this year.”
