24-year-old robs man with toy gun

JOBURG – A suspect who robbed a driver with a toy gun was apprehended by the police in Joburg CBD.

A toy gun-brandishing 24-year-old suspect involved in an armed robbery was arrested by the police on 17 October.

A spokesperson for the Johannesburg Central Police Captain Xoli Mbele said the arrest occurred on the corner of Commissioner and Delvers streets at about 1pm.

Mbele said the suspect and two accomplices robbed a motorist at the same street corner. The driver was stationary at a red traffic light when he was confronted by the three suspects, one who had a firearm, who demanded his cell phone.

The victim handed over his phone before police officers arrived. The two accomplices fled with the victim’s cell phone but the 24-year-old suspect was arrested and a toy-gun was recovered.

Mbele said the two accomplices were still at large. The apprehended suspect appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court and an investigation is still ongoing.
