#RIPMosesMoyo: Media mourns the death of skilled Johannesburg journalist

JOHANNESBURG – With his charming smile and quiet demeanor, Moses had an unparalleled passion for covering community news and putting issues that directly affect communities at the forefront.

 

The sudden passing of local news journalist Moses Moyo has left many of his colleagues in the media industry shattered.

Moyo, founder and editor of one of the prominent newspapers in Johannesburg Inner City Gazette, passed away on 25 October after a short illness.

Moyo was well-known and loved in the media and many who have worked with him have expressed their shock at the news of his untimely passing.

In a statement issued by South African Editors Forum (Sanef), an organisation representing journalists and editors, the body said it was devastated by Moyo’s passing.

Sanef has extended its deepest condolences to all his family, friends and colleagues adding that their prayers are with the Moyo-family as they mourn his sudden death.

“Moyo was a long-standing, Sanef council member who was deeply passionate and committed to strengthening media freedom, promoting ethical journalism and defending the public’s right to know,” Sanef said in the statement.

“With his charming smile and quiet demeanour, Moses had an unparalleled passion for covering community news and putting issues that directly affect communities at the forefront. This made him hugely popular among city residents, especially those living in the Johannesburg metro.”

Moyo had recently expanded his business, the popular Inner City Gazette, to cover the Tshwane Metro area and he was looking forward to further growing the paper.

With his wealth of experience in community media, Sanef said that he was part of its newly formed subcommittee on community media that seeks to strengthen this critical section of the industry, ensure its sustainability and bring to the fore the challenges it faces.

The community described Moyo as a social and political activist, saying he was a devoted, courageous friend of their communities. The South African Jewish Board of Directors (SAJBD), the SA Zionist Federation (SAZF) and the SA Friends of Israel (Safi) have all expressed shock and grief by the untimely passing of Moyo.

Moyo was laid to rest over the weekend.
