Murder suspect sentenced to life imprisonment

YEOVILLE – After seven years of evading the police, a murder suspect has been sentenced to life imprisonment.

After years of evading police, a criminal wanted for murder has been sentenced to life imprisonment at South Gauteng High Court on 1 October.

Spokesperson for the Yeoville Police Station Captain Sifiso Mabizela said that the suspect, Athohetius Moyo, managed to hide from police for seven years and evaded arrest by leaving the country while extradition attempts failed.

The suspect had a case of murder opened up against him after he murdered his ex-girlfriend’s partner on 28 July 2010. Mabizela said that Moyo broke into their home in Yeoville at 4.15am and beat the 65-year-old man with a brick before assaulting his ex-girlfriend and fleeing the scene. A case of murder, attempted murder, and housebreaking with intent to commit murder was opened at the Yeoville Police Station.

Following the murder, he fled the country but returned last year and the surviving victim was able to positively point out his whereabouts to the police.

Mabizela added, “The trial in the matter was finalised on 1 October at South Gauteng High Court where the suspect was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder, two years imprisonment for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, and five years for housebreaking with intent to commit murder. All sentences will run concurrently.”
