Police officers nab gunman in Westbury

JOBURG – Police were acting on a tip-off about a house which is being used to sell drugs.

Police activity in the crime and protest-ridden Westbury is beginning to yield fruit following the arrest of an alleged drug dealer during a raid at a house by members of the Johannesburg Flying Squad on 4 October.

The police were acting on a tip-off about a house located at the intersection of Solomon and Foxglove Court streets in the western township of Johannesburg.

The area has been in the news following a two-week-long protest after a woman and a child were fatally wounded during an alleged gunfight in the area.

The woman was reported to have been killed and a child has since been admitted to a hospital, fighting for her life.

According to the spokesperson for the Johannesburg Flying Squad Sergeant Desmond Subramoney, a suspect, not related to the woman’s incident, was arrested for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Subramoney said their officers received a tip-off about drug dealings in that house and immediately acted on it and the suspect was arrested. “Upon searching the house, an unlicensed 9mm CZ83 Browning pistol with serial numbers filed off was recovered inside the house.

“On further investigation, it was discovered that the suspect is possibly linked to other shootings in the area.

“The suspect was arrested for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and was then detained at the Sophiatown Police Station. The 29-year-old suspect is expected to appear in court soon.”

Meanwhile, the situation still remains tense in the area with residents taking to the streets demanding the government assist them in fighting the scourge of crime in their area and, more precisely, drug dealing.
