BEREA – The suspect was shot and wounded in the lower body.

A ‘trigger-happy’ suspect was shot and hospitalised on 15 October during a shoot-out with the Hillbrow police in Berea.

Spokesperson for Hillbrow Police Station Sergeant Mduduzi Zondo said the police received a tip-off about the suspect’s whereabouts and went to Berea. When the suspect saw the police he ran away. “During a police chase, the suspect turned around and opened fire on the police and the police returned fire.

“The suspect was shot and wounded in the lower body. He was apprehended and is currently in hospital under police guard.”

A firearm with serial numbers filed off was recovered as well as ammunition.

Zondo said the suspect faces charges of murder, attempted murder, possession of an illegal firearm as well as ammunition.

Due to his injuries, the suspect will only be able to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court once he is discharged. “We’re not yet sure when he will be out of hospital but he will appear in court as soon as he comes out.”

It is not clear what led the suspect to shooting and subsequently killing the victim, however, Zondo said police have learned that they were apparently involved in an argument.
