Mercy Day marks the birth of Catherine McAuley and the beginning of Mercy Schools in Ireland and eventually across the globe. Catherine McAuley was an Irish religious sister who founded the Sisters of Mercy.
St Teresa’s School in Craighall Park celebrated Mercy Day by participating in the ‘Leave Your Print’ barefoot campaign. The campaign was initiated by the Catholic Schools Office to raise money for schools that are severely under-resourced.
According to marketing manager at St Teresa’s, Debbie de Koning, “All children came to school in their school uniform, but barefoot, to stand in the place of so many people in our beautiful country who are less fortunate.
“The aim of the campaign was for the children to try and understand how difficult it is for many children to walk long distances to school every day without their feet being protected by shoes.”
Father Shaun Mary von Lillienfeld from St Martin de Porres Church joined in the campaign too, celebrating Mass barefoot and inviting the adults in the church to remove their shoes as well.
“All the children contributed a donation towards the campaign and at the same time learnt empathy for others less fortunate than themselves,” concluded Koning.
