City Power responds to Highlands North residents’ issues

HIGHLANDS NORTH – City Power has responded to the Highlands North cable theft issues.

City Power has responded to the recent incidents following reports of cable theft in Highlands North.

In the article, Cable theft vexes Highlands North, Week ending 12 October, North Eastern Tribune reported on the numerous power outages that residents experience in the area due to cable theft. A resident in the area, who wished to remain anonymous, alleged that criminals utilise the Sandspruit river near the Highlands North Bowling Club as an entry and escape route to steal power cables in the area.

Spokesperson for City Power Isaac Mangena said, “The area has suffered two cable theft incidents in July and September. The area has not been identified as a hotspot as of yet, however, we do have our security armed response team doing patrols in the area 24 hours as part of our crime prevention initiative.”

He added that the government entity is installing aerial conductor cable across the city to prevent cables from being stolen. The aluminium-based cables are no value to copper cable thieves and are much harder to cut.

Mangena said, “City Power is also conducting educational awareness in the communities that are affected by cable theft.”

He called on residents to be on the lookout for suspicious construction vehicles working on our electrical network whether marked or unmarked and report them immediately to 080 000 3251.
