Killarney resident Pam Koppel is frustrated over the lack of action from City entities regarding the restoration of the pavement opposite Killarney Bridge flats in 9th Street.
Koppel said, “It has been between four and five years since I first complained to Joburg Water and nothing has happened. Each entity passes the buck to another.”
Koppel’s mother lives in the block of flats opposite the pile of rubble which is strewn over the pavement at 32, 9th Street.
She explained that Joburg Water dug up the pavement four years ago in order to repair a water leak. She further explained that the street light on the pavement subsequently leaned over the road as a result of the repair job by Joburg Water, causing City Power to come through and repair the street light.
City Power was also approached regarding the pavement’s repair since their repair of the street light had caused further damage to the pavement. City Power said to Koppel that the repair should be conducted by Joburg Water.
Koppel contacted Ward 73 councillor Eleanor Huggett who said that the area does not fall under her jurisdiction, stating that it was under the control of Ward 67 councillor Martha Mazibuko who failed to respond to the matter.
Huggett said, “Now that I hear that nothing has been resolved I will re-escalate to the chief of staff. Ward 67 is Region F and Ward 73 is Region E so we have different officials so I have no contacts for assistance regarding Joburg Water or JRA.”
Simon Nxusa who works as a security guard for Killarney Bridge said, “This mess is ugly and it makes the building look ugly and attracts rats.”
Koppel said: “It is sad that private citizens will have to pay to get this repaired after numerous attempts to contact city entities for four years.”
Joburg Water, City Power, Ward 67 councillor Refiloe Mazibuko and the Johannesburg Roads Agency were contacted for comment but had not responded by the time of going to print.
