#TrafficAlert: ANC Johannesburg region march to Gauteng premier’s office to demand land

JOHANNESBURG – The ANC is not about land grabs but we want the Premier David Makhura to release the Rapid Land Release Programme for the people, says Motongo.

Traffic is expected to be brought to a standstill on the morning of 5 October in the Johannesburg CBD due to the African National Congress’ (ANC) march to Gauteng Premier David Makhura’s office on Commissioner Street in Marshalltown.

Members of the party are expected to gather at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown, said ANC Joburg Regional spokesperson, Jolidee Motongo.

According to Motongo, they will march to the premier’s office to demand Makhura fast-track the land distribution programme in Johannesburg.

“We want the premier to speed up the Rapid Land Release Programme for the people of Johannesburg so that they can build their own homes,” said Motongo.

“We, as ANC, we are not about land grabs but we want the premier to release the programme so that the people can acquire land to build homes for their families.”

Motongo told North Eastern Tribune that they would also march to the City of Johannesburg offices in Braamfontein to demand that mayor Herman Mashaba and his cabinet reinstate the free water programme.

He said they would demand that the City reinstate the 6 000 litres of free water for the people of Johannesburg.

“Also, we demand that they make public the alleged corruption that they always talk about against the previous ANC administration.

“We will again demand that the City build the houses that they promised to the people of Johannesburg when they took over the municipality after the 2016 local government elections.”

Motongo said they would also march to Eskom’s offices in Braamfontein to demand that if there were issues regarding electricity, residents shouldn’t be the ones who carried the burden but the issues should be resolved by Eskom rather than cutting supply.

Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, the spokesperson for the Metro police, could not confirm or deny that the march would take place and could not say which roads would be affected.

“I don’t have any details about the march… I will check and you can contact me later,” he said.
When contacted, his phone was off.
