A great gogos match

FAIRMOUNT – All five goals were scored by their captain, Anna Bopape.

Sandringham Elderly Women’s Club hammered their North West visitors Itsoseng FC 5–0 in a thrilling football match played at their home turf at the Fairmount soccer grounds.

The match on a Saturday afternoon was to strengthen friendships between the two clubs which comprise mostly senior citizens.

The visitors travelled from the Nhobi area in the North West to honour their invitation from the local soccer club comprising domestic workers from the Johannesburg north-east suburbs.

The first half started slowly with both teams creating scoring opportunities but failing to convert their chances. The teams went into the break at 0–0.

In the second half, the Sandringham-based club, playing with only nine players because they were the younger team, started to show character and none more so than their captain, Anna Bopape who bagged all five goals.

The club’s coach and player, Hilda Hamese, said this was the greatest football match they have ever played.

“We played very well and it really does not matter what is the final score, this is the greatest match ever since we started playing in 2010,” she said.

“Those grannies [of Itsoseng FC] can really run and what is amazing about them, they’re much older than our players… I’m very happy and excited about this game and it will definitely go down in our club’s history.”

Itsoseng FC coach, Oriah Ngoako also shared the same sentiments. “We are very happy that we finally came and we played this match because they have been inviting us to come and play them,” said Ngoako.

“Even though I’m not happy with the age difference, all-in-all we are happy to be here and enjoying this day with the Sandringham team.”
