Councillor Rugheimer urges residents to keep Victoria Park grounds clean

LOMBARDY EAST – The local sports and recreation office will ensure a supply of waste bins and bags are given to the local soccer body to keep the park clean after playing.

Ward 81 councillor Irene Rugheimer urges residents in Lombardy East to refrain from dumping waste on the Victoria Park sports field saying they make the area unsightly.

According to the councillor, soccer players, including the fans using the grounds over the weekends, are to be blamed for the mess in the park.

Rugheimer said she has received complaints from the nearby residents about the filth in the park saying the area has become unbearable and demanding that a local soccer federation takes responsibility and clean up the facility.

Rugheimer said she then visited the grounds to check and it was indeed filth with litter thrown all over the park. “After receiving complaints from residents about the mess left after soccer activities at the Victoria Park sports field on Wellington Road, I approached the Sports and Recreation Department and requested that we do a site inspection together.

“We then did an unannounced visit to the area on Monday and verified the alleged appalling conditions and littering at the park. There were papers lying around both inside and outside the fields. There were rubbish bags. They said that this is unacceptable.”

What is most concerning is that there are two employees residing in the centre and therefore we don’t see any reason why the area is not clean, she added.

Management has taken the issue to heart and has agreed that the department will ensure a supply of waste bins and refuse bags.

Rugheimer said, “They will also make sure that every Monday morning the area is clean and will monitor the progress on Sundays and Mondays.

“The local football association (LFA) will provide a cleaner every weekend on their match days to ensure they tidy the area whenever they finish playing.”

She, however, said it appears that residents are also dumping their waste there. “We appeal to residents to report anyone dumping in the area…let’s work together to keep our areas neat and clean.”
