#JoburgFire: HOSPERSA says they feel the state ‘let them down’ in terms of workers’ occupational safety

JOBURG – Organised labour in the Gauteng health sector addressed the media this morning, sharing their concerns for the safety of workers in government buildings across Johannesburg.

Organised labour in the Gauteng health sector held a press briefing outside the Gauteng Health offices this morning, and journalist Andrei van Wyk was there to capture the action.

The organised labour who called the meeting include National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (NEHAWU), Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA), Health and Other Services Personnel Trade Union of South Africa (HOSPERSA), National Union of Public Service and Allied Workers (NUPSAW) and Public Servants Association of South Africa (PSA).

The briefing follows the meeting that the unions had with the provincial government on Friday regarding the #JoburgFire that ripped through the building in Joburg’s CBD during the week. The building is known as the Bank of Lisbon and houses various government departments including that of health, human settlements and cooperative governance and traditional affairs.

In live tweets from the scene, Van Wyk shares what the organised labour said:
