Five alleged robbers remanded for attempted house robbery in Houghton

HOUGHTON – Private security officers have been hailed for their rapid response and ensuring the suspects were arrested.

Five alleged robbers have been remanded in police custody after their bail application was denied twice by the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court.

The five suspects apparently attempted to rob a house in Houghton along Houghton Drive on 31 August.

According to the Norwood Police Station’s spokesperson Captain Elliot Tshivhase, the suspects forced entry into a house then held and threatened a security guard with a firearm. While in the house they apparently suspected that something might be going on outside and decided not to continue with the robbery.

“They then left the house and drove away in their getaway bakkie which was reported stolen at the Booysens Police Station,” said Tshivhase.

“The guard, who had been held at gunpoint, alerted the patrolling security guards who gave chase until they cornered them. The suspects were cuffed and handed to the Norwood police who placed them under arrest and charged them with attempted house robbery, possession of unlicensed firearm and stolen vehicle.”

They’ve appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court twice to apply for their bail but were denied and are currently detained at the Joburg Prison and are expected to appear in court again soon.
