The Craigpark Residents Association (CRA) is working on a number of projects to uplift and beautify the areas of Craighall Park, Craighall and Dunkeld West.
One of its completed projects includes the refurbishment of kerbs and pathways on the corner of Clarence and Lancaster Avenues in Craighall Park.
Robyn Shamu, who heads up environmental projects on behalf of the CRA, said this area was one of the ones identified for improvement.
“The curbing and paths were in a bad condition. We needed to make them more access friendly for wheelchairs and safer for pedestrians. We also wanted to beautify this space and make it more attractive,” said Shamu.
Stock controller at Lancaster Family Pharmacy in Lancaster Avenue, Khulekani Mkandla said the upgrades make the area look more pleasant and user-friendly.
Shamu and her team planted garden beds on both corners of the road and repaved the paths. “We would like to move on to the other side of the road too.”
Along Jan Smuts Avenue, they have also planted fever trees in an effort to beautify the suburb.
The CRA also employs two men, Simon Maphanga and Isaac Mhlanga, to cut verges from Parkhurst to Craighall and pick up rubbish along the Spruit in Delta Park. The men also cut grass along the river, plant trees, cut low vegetation and remove weeds from along the river.
The CRA has also installed benches along the river and together with Pam Golding and the Craighall Veterinary Hospital provided dog bag dispensers for dog walkers.
“When I first started working for the CRA four years ago, the grass was overgrown and there was rubbish all over the place. Now it is clean,” said Maphanga.
Shamu said, “People now want to walk in the park and there are cars parked all the way along the street on weekends. People enjoy using a well-maintained and safe area.”
