Johannesburg Flying Squad arrests a suspect in Hillbrow for business robbery

HILLBROW – Two suspects fled and one suspect was arrested.

A suspect has been arrested and two are sought by the Johannesburg police following a business robbery that took place in Edenvale on 4 August.

According to the Johannesburg Flying Squad, the suspects robbed Redline Bottle Store in Edenvale and took large quantities of alcohol. Spokesperson Sergeant Desmond Subramoney said the suspect was arrested in Hillbrow after their officers had received a tip-off.

“The suspects were spotted sitting inside a gold Toyota Etios at Esselen Street on the corner of Banket Street in Hillbrow,” said Subramoney.

“The members responded and spotted the vehicle with three occupants driving away. A chase ensued and the suspects’ vehicle lost control and smashed into a white Iveco taxi on the corner of Pieterson and Claim streets.”

Two suspects fled and one suspect was arrested, he added.

Upon searching the vehicle, Subramoney said an unlicensed Taurus .38 special snub nose revolver was recovered including the large quantities of alcohol inside the vehicle.

The suspect was arrested and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm, suspected stolen property and reckless and negligent driving.

He was detained at the Hillbrow Police Station and Subramoney said he is expected to appear soon in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court.

“A manhunt is also underway to arrest the two suspects who fled and anyone with information is requested to inform the police.”
