WEATHER CAUTION: Heavy rain is expected over parts of Gauteng

JOHANNESBURG – The cold front is expected to clear by Saturday, leaving Joburg with sunny skies.

The South African Weather Service has issued an alert of potential heavy rain that may cause flooding in parts of Gauteng.

Johannesburg experienced strong winds on 9 August resulting in cold temperatures of around 18 degrees.

Severe storms have been expected to hit central and eastern Free State which may affect southern parts of Gauteng and Mpumalanga late Thursday evening (9 August) into Friday (10 August).

In the case of heavy storms follow these safety tips while driving:

  • Give yourself more time for heavy traffic due to rain
  • Keep a safe following distance between you and the vehicle ahead of you
  • Follow the designated speed limit or rather drive slower in the rain. Roads are very slippery when wet
  • Turn on your headlights
  • Make sure that your windscreen wipers are in good conditions and use them
  • Turn on your heater to avoid your car steaming up
  • Never drive through water if you can’t see through it
  • Avoid low-lying areas.
