A Fairwood resident in Buller Street is ecstatic that the water meter that has been leaking for over seven weeks has finally been restored.
The meter has been fixed on 24 July and the water pressure is said to be running normally again. This comes after a resident contacted North Eastern Tribune when residents’ complaints to the authorities seemed no to have any effect.
Residents contacted City of Johannesburg entity, Joburg Water and their councillor, Eleanor Huggett, several times since the meter started leaking but nothing was done for almost two months. According to Dian Sparks who owns a property next to the meter, a lot of water went to waste throughout that period. She contacted Tribune who then followed up on the matter by contacting Joburg Water and Councillor Eleanor Huggett. Both the officials blamed the delay on a labour dispute between Joburg Water and its employees.
As reported in the article Fairview leaking water pipe now reaches seven weeks on 23 July, Sparks said the leak was affecting them and their neighbours. “Our water pressure is low and we don’t even have hot water in our geysers while a lot of water is getting wasted on the street,” she said at the time.
On 31 July, Sparks sent an email thanking Tribune for following up on the matter and added that the meter has finally been restored. “I am very happy to tell you that on Tuesday 24 July a team arrived to fix the leak. It took them just two hours to fix… the water had continuously run for seven weeks and five days – an unbelievable waste of water,” said Sparks in the email.
