Parktown Boys’ High School, together with its charity arm, Heart of the Lion, are ‘moved to give’ in celebrating the late Nelson Mandela’s centenary birthday month.
The boys decided to place the needs of Kingsway Christian School – which is under threat of closing down – at the top of the initiative. They did so by running a 17-day outreach programme, asking the public to contribute.
Acting fundraiser at Kingsway Centre of Concern, Lara Lotter said the school had been let down because an enormous amount of funds that they used to receive yearly, didn’t happen this year. “In short, we are in serious trouble. If we don’t raise the funds we need to keep the school going, we will need to close our doors in December,” said Lotter who added that the first and most urgent need was funding, ideally, monthly recurring donations.
A list of the school’s needs also includes food items as well as a combi that needs to be repaired as they are often unable to attend events.
Tracey Fin, events organiser at Parktown boys said the 17-day initiative included a large tarp which the Parktown boys, including organisers, Dean Fin, Justin van Wyk, Emerald van Wyk and Kingsway School children, worked on by painting it and placing their fingerprints on the tarp.
She stated, “The initiative has been running for two weeks and will culminate in a mass aerobics event for the children of Kingsway on 18 July to celebrate the movement.”
