WATCH: 10km walk in support of the waste-pickers in Greenside

GREENSIDE – The recyclers have lost their premises at Pirates Club after the City stepped in.

With the fate of one Non- Profit Organisation hanging in the balance, a crowd of supporters gathered for a solidarity walk in Greenside.

The organisation called WastePreneurs embarked on a 10km walk from their headquarters at Pirates Club, all the way to the Newtown Recycling Centre in Johannesburg. Supporters included representatives from Momba Foundation, Mzansi Mamela, BAM events and Sim and Botsi Attorneys.

A sponsor of the programme, Brad Fisher, gave the attendees a brief account of the WastePreneurs journey. “These are the hardest working people in society. These guys walk several kilometres a day to try and earn a living.”

Metro police as well as the South African Police service were present and accompanied the walkers and trolley-pushers.
