Metro cop assaulted for controlling traffic

HOUGHTON – About 10 more taxi drivers face arrest.

 

A Johannesburg taxi driver was arrested and charged for assaulting a female Metro police officer while controlling traffic in Houghton.

The incident happened on 20 July on Houghton Drive when a taxi driver, who had been stopped, attacked and assaulted the officer.

There was traffic on the road and the officer had stopped the driver to give other cars a chance to move but the taxi driver was apparently enraged by this.

He then bumped the officer with his car, got out and assaulted her even more. “The taxi driver attacked an officer while doing her job and further assaulted her while she was lying down,” said Metro police spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.

“Other Metro police officers came to her rescue and a scuffle ensued between the Metro police officers and about 10 taxi drivers. The officer who was assaulted was then taken to the hospital.”

The officer is recovering well in hospital and Minnaar said she is expected back soon.

A case of assault and negligent driving has been opened with the Hillbrow Police Station and spokesperson, Sergeant Mduduzi Zondo has confirmed that.

Minnaar could not say when other taxi drivers will be arrested but reaffirmed that they will face the full might of the law.
