Fairview leaking water pipe now reaches seven weeks

FAIRVIEW – Labour dispute is the reason for the delay to fix water leaks leaving property owners desperate.

After a series of phone calls and emails made and sent to the City of Johannesburg’s entity, Joburg Water, the leaking water meter in Fairview is still not fixed.

A water pipe on Buller Street has been leaking for seven weeks now and residents complain that this is affecting their lives.

Diane Sparks, a resident of Fairview, told the North Eastern Tribune that the situation is getting worse even though they have been reporting this to the authorities.

Sparks said they contacted Joburg Water about five times and were given reference numbers which Tribune has also seen.

“I also contacted the councillor [Eleanor Huggett] but the situation still remains the same and even worse,” she said.

“Now the water pressure in my house has been affected and we’re without hot water. My neighbours are complaining about the same situation.”

Huggett confirmed to Tribune that she was contacted saying she is aware of the situation.

“I have escalated the matter but the delay is due to the Joburg Water’s employees’ striking.

“What can I do?” asked the councillor adding that councillors can only do oversight.

Spokesperson for Joburg Water, Isaac Dludlu, could not be reached for further comment by 19 July when going to print.

On 13 July, he told Tribune the matter will be attended to within 48 hours but that did not happen.

Tribune followed up on the matter again on 16 July with both Sparks and Dludlu – only to be told the situation still remains the same.
