Three Norwood officers take on their next challenge – retirement

NORWOOD – The three retired officers were each presented with a certificate and a token of appreciation as part of the farewell ceremony.

Norwood Police Station is short of officers after three long service members have retired to spend some time with their families.

Officers, former Captain Zacharia Mahlase, clerk Dorcus Sepeng and switchboard operator Sibongile Mailula retired on 6 July.

The three were honoured with a South African Police Service certificate and were also presented with gifts as a token of appreciation. The ceremony was attended by senior staff members including station commander, Colonel Anna Jojisa to honour and give them a significant send-off.

Norwood police spokesperson, Captain Elliot Tshivhase, said the three have served the station and the community with diligence and pride. “We are honoured to have worked with the three of them and we wish them well on their new journey.

“Sepeng and Mailula have been with the station as long as we have and we believe they are the long-service members of the station and our community.”

Mahlase took an early retirement and according to Tshivhase, he worked at the station for about seven years. Mahlase came to the station in 2011 after he was promoted from his work at the court. Tshivhase said he did a great job at the station. “These are the distinguished members of our police force and we wish them a healthy retirement and hope they will enjoy their time with their friends and families.”

Jojisa has also wished the three former officers well but said it is also disheartening to lose such dedicated people. “I’m really losing from these three officers but there’s nothing we can say or do because they’re going on pension.

“We can best wish them well with their families. The only thing is the skills that they are leaving with will leave a gap in the station and the community.”
