Two men were arrested and detained by the Johannesburg Flying Squad and loaded firearms were confiscated.
The suspects were apprehended on the corner of Twist and Pretoria streets on 12 July in Hillbrow, said police spokesperson, Sergeant Desmond Subramoney.
“Our officers spotted a suspicious black Mercedes Benz with false number plates with two occupants,” he said.
“They followed the vehicle and when it stopped in Hillbrow, they pounced on them, searched the vehicle and recovered an unlicensed AK-47 with three magazines and 64 live rounds, a Dashprod rifle with two magazines and 60 live rounds, and a 9mm Norinco pistol with one magazine and 17 live rounds.”
He said the serial numbers of the weapons had been filed off and the vehicle was reported to have been hijacked near Ogies.
He said they were charged with possession of unlicensed firearms, ammunition and a stolen motor vehicle. The suspects, aged between 36 and 44, are expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court.
Meanwhile, another armed suspect was arrested for an unlicensed firearm.
Subramoney said the incident occurred on 10 July along Corlett Drive next to Corlett Gardens.
“Our officers were responding to a business robbery and on arrival, they searched the area and a suspect was apprehended hiding under a fallen tree.
“He was in a possession of an unlicensed 9mm CZ pistol with one magazine and four live rounds.”
The serial number on the pistol had been filed off, he added.
The suspect faces charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and is also expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court soon.
