St John’s College music teacher victorious at the World Choir Games

JOHANNESBURG – St John's College music teacher Sidumo Nyamezele wins big at the World Choir Games.

Music educator and head of African music at St John’s College led his choir to victory at the 10th World Choir Games.

Sidumo Nyamezele is a known and respected educator at St John’s College and preparatory communities where he teaches music theory and African music. He was selected to lead and conduct the University of Johannesburg Choir in the folklore a capella category at this year’s choir games held in Pretoria on 7 July.

“The World Choir Games are the Olympics or world cup for choirs. So it was an extreme honour to take part,” said Nyamezele.

He led the 55 person choir in the competition’s folklore category with a 15 minute medley of African a capella pieces. The choir scored an overall score of 95 per cent in this section and was declared the winner.

Nyamezele said that the win was extremely humbling. “To be honest when you are on stage you do not know what the score will be. When we received the accolade and the weight that it carries, it was so exciting.”
