Patients turned away at Yeoville Clinic due to power interruption

YEOVILLE – Patients were turned away but requested to go to the nearest Hillbrow Clinic.

A faulty electricity grid at the Yeoville Clinic has forced staff to turn patients away because services were interrupted for a day, according to Ward 67 councillor, Refiloe Mazibuko.

This incident happened on 9 July, resulting in patients told to use an alternative health care facility elsewhere within the vicinity.

It is still unclear what caused the substation to be faulty but Mazibuko said City Power contractors were contacted and they managed to restore power back.

“There were sparks when we went to investigate and we had to call in City Power who immediately dispatched a contractor to fix it,” said Mazibuko.

“They first came and went but came back after a while and the substation was then fixed. I also know that some patients had to be sent away but were requested to go to the Hillbrow Clinic because it is the closest clinic.”

When contacted on 12 July, Tumisang Morapedi, an operational manager at the clinic, said he was not at the clinic when this happened.

“I was away and only came back yesterday (11 July) and I have no information about this but I will check,” he said.

Morapedi told North Eastern Tribune that they only experienced a power interruption on Wednesday due to an overload on their grid.

“I only know about a temporary one that happened yesterday but it only lasted about 10 to 15 minutes and it was due to an overload from the heaters.

“In the morning it gets very cold and our staff plug in their heaters to get warm and we understand. However, this affected our electricity supply but it was immediately fixed and no patient was turned away,” said Morapedi.

The electricity has since been restored on the substation and Mazibuko said no interruptions were reported since then.
