Union of Jewish Women in Johannesburg to treat the needy on Mandela Day

NORWOOD – There is nothing sweeter than the gift of knowing someone cares.

To commemorate this year’s Mandela Day, the Union of Jewish Women in Johannesburg (UJW) will be spending two days preparing for this special day.

They will spend the days distributing 2 000 cupcakes to homes for the elderly, hospitals and children’s homes.

“Volunteers are invited to attend an ice-a-thon at the Norwood Mall on Monday 16 July, which will be held throughout the day and they’re also invited to make cards to go with each of the cupcakes,” read a statement from the union.

The statement also read, “These cupcakes will then be individually packed and sent out with volunteers over the course of 17 and 18 July. There is nothing sweeter than the gift of knowing someone cares, and together with the Norwood Mall and our volunteers, we can all show that we care.”

Interested people can get involved by either donating un-iced cupcakes, make a monetary donation towards the ingredients or attend the ice-a-thon at the Norwood Mall.

Those who wish to participate, the union requests them to pre-register first for the ice-a-thon and a suggested donation of R10 per person is required.

The UJW has been participating in Mandela Day since its inception, and once again there is enormous excitement around this year’s project.

The community’s response to previous appeals has always been extremely generous and heartening, and the union adds that this year’s event will be no different.
