ANC conference and security insourcing: Here’s the low-down

JOBURG – We take a look at what happened over the course of last week in the City of Johannesburg.

The ANC’s regional conference, which ended on 1 July, saw Geoffrey Makhubo elected as its chairperson. The party congratulated the regional leadership collective and wished them luck with championing ‘the implementation of radical socio-economic transformation in the regions’.

During another weekend event, 1 600 security personnel were insourced and will now report to Metro police. They are the first of 4 000 security contract workers the City plans to insource. The next phase of insourcing for remaining workers will be implemented over the next two months.

And in more Metro police news, close to 2 000 Metro officers, as well as insourced security guards, will now work a four-days-on, four-days-off shift system. Officers have reportedly been calling for this since 2002, but have had to keep working six days and only get three days off.

The new shift system, which came into effect on 1 July, is a 6am to 6pm day shift and 6pm to 6am night shift.
