St John’s College Academy celebrates 10 years

HOUGHTON – St John's College Academy brought together their children and faculty to celebrate their 10th anniversary.

 

Young and old came to celebrate St John’s College Academy’s 10th anniversary.

The academy commemorated this momentous occasion on 5 June with a beautiful gathering of current and old classmates alongside the programme’s faculty members.

Founded in 2008, the academy is an after-school enrichment programme for children from grades 10 to 12 with a focus on mathematics, life skills, physical sciences and English. The programme caters for boys from disadvantaged backgrounds who attend school in Berea, Yeoville and Hillbrow. The youngsters are identified by their schools as having great potential during their Grade 9 year and are enrolled in the programme at the beginning of Grade 10.

Director of the academy, Agnes Nugent gave a heartfelt speech sharing her experiences from the St John’s College Academy’s conception to its present. “I look around at all of you fine young men, and my heart bursts with pride at what so many of you have, and are achieving.

“St John’s College is making a difference to our local community. These young men stand proudly at their schools, conduct themselves professionally wherever they go and are a testimony to what the academy has done for them.”
