South African dressmakers to showcase at the Torino Fashion Week

JOBURG – Designers will showcase our country's talent during the two nights dedicated to SA at this year's Torino Fashion Week.

About 23 South African fashion pundits are expected to showcase their latest traditional styles of garments at the spectacular Torino Fashion Week in Milan, Italy.

The week-long fashion parade will start on 27 June until 3 July with local South African designers illustrating their own remarkable crocheted fashion.

According to the Torino Fashion Match website, the Torino Fashion Week event is managed by TMODA Association and has become an important date not to be missed for many in the fashion industry. The city of Turin provides a pit stop for those who work in this exciting environment, from fashion beginners to emerging fashion designers. The event provides these designers with an opportunity to be inspired by new trends and innovation in the city and from the city’s tradition.

All of this has been made possible because of the collaboration between Torino Fashion Week, the Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to uplift small enterprises with the potential for growth in the export markets.

Nina Sedumedi, a gifted Johannesburg-based designer, said South African talent will be showcased the during the two nights dedicated to Africa. Designers will also have an opportunity to attend business-to-business meetings with their international counterparts.

Although Sedumedi has recently participated in trade shows internationally, she said this is a good platform to boost her brand as a designer. “This is my first time to showcase my work on that world stage and it’s also a business opportunity that can help expand my horizon and even a chance to grow my brand.

“I’m very excited to be representing my country as a fashion brand and the support we have in South Africa as small businesses gives me enough courage to continue working hard as a brand and never limit myself to other avenues. The more companies prosper the better the economy will be and I’m proud to be contributing to the economic growth of my country,” she said.

Sedumedi will showcase her Setswana-made heritage designs. She said these designs are her interpretation of modern fashion fused with a traditional style.

Some of the other local designers who will also showcase their work at the fashion show are Scalo Design by Sello Medupe Ledikana and Sun Goddess.
