Wellness meetings provide support for cancer patients

PARKTOWN – CanSurvive Cancer Support hosted a meeting at Hazeldene Hall in Parktown on 9 June.

The CanSurvive Cancer Support group held their monthly meeting at the Hazeldene Hall on 9 June, where they provided support and a confidential environment to cancer patients.

The non-profit organisation has been providing a platform for patients and informing them about how they can open up about their concerns and experiences since 2009.

Cancer patient and co-founder of the CanSurvive, Chris Olivier said the support groups help other patients realise that they can heal and get over the disease. “Our monthly group meetings consist of a speaker, usually a medical professional.

“This is followed by a share-and-care session where members share their stories, their ups and downs, and get non-medical advice from survivors who have already walked the cancer road. It is very helpful for new patients to talk about their experiences and to see and hear those of us who have survived cancer and are living good lives.”

The venues and refreshments are sponsored by Netcare and the organisation raises funds at various sports events and health days to help support patients at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital and the Far East Rand Hospital.

“We have survivor buddies to help guide new patients and help them to understand their treatment. We are looking for sponsors and volunteers to help us provide refreshments at the state hospitals.”

Normally, professional medical doctors and caregivers are also allowed to attend meetings.
